Ich Beach Mouse Berliner

(December 9, 2003)

So most of you know that I work for this travel search engine. I classify articles. Classifying articles basically means that I read the travel article, pull out all the specially mentioned attractions and accomodations and rate each one from 1 to 5 in order of relevance, then write a short piece of copy describing the article. Many times the attraction or accomodation (park, beach, etc) isn't yet listed in the search engine's index, so I have to add a record. To add the record, I have to look up that attraction online and find its website (www.jonesbeach.org or whatever) and create a record using its address and info.

Today I got a Washington Post article to classify. The article was about, believe it or not, beaches in Berlin. Germany. Apparently "strandbars" have become quite the thing in Berlin. These strandbars are beaches built up "literally from nothing on strips of vacant land...From the beginning of summer, Berliners have poured in. They bring a mix of whimsy and seriousness, playing volleyball, sipping margaritas, gazing at the water and pretending for a few hours that their metropolis of energy and upheaval owes less of its history to Kaiser Wilhelm II than to Captain Morgan."

While researching I came across a German site with a button saying "Translate this site?"

I said, "Why not." Hilarity ensues. I could use none of it. But I had a great time trying to comprehend. If anyone knows the definition of either "the open air theatre on the mouse shelter" or "witch boiler yard theatre," please email me.

...becomes...

A further large problem is the use of the Parkes than a open air tavern with attached culture program "witch boiler yard theatre" (range Spreeufer/Monbijoustrasse). With zynischer desire at the "szenigen location" thousands of party visitor/inside are lured in the park and the child bath, which it vermuellen and been noisy. The Monbijoupark is completely "over-used" thereby, in the consequence is the park with its playground and the last dog-free liegewiesen (in the child bath) for families with children then a further "NO-play-AREA".

...becomes...

The operator, that already proved an extension and an increasing steadiness the "beach bar" in the summer 2002 that he can not prevent these excrescences and wants, plans even with buildings in the park, wide sand fills and "culture installations" with the Spreeufer. Thus also the planning of the bank promenade is questioned.

Stood at the beginning of of October 2003: The beach bar operator pushes on a "winter solution" and wants to build different buildings for it recently into the park. Thus the fears of the BV SpV assumed from the outset that the Kneipier wants secretly the "temporary exception variant" in truth constant, have itself what from it to date word-rich & entruestet abgestritten became, to 100% confirms - however is this not decided thing, but only the for the first time publicly expressed desire of the Kneipiers.

Stood April 2003: In a discussion between BA center, which became beach bar operator and the BV SpV concerning the current statement of the BV SpV obtained of 27.03.2003 to a large extent agreement. Without the fence specified there (point 4+5) in a 3-woechigen test phase one does. If it did not function then, it is afterwards established and the situation is again observed. Afterwards finally one decides.

Stood November 2002: The BV demands the stop of the commercialization of the public park surfaces by Techno parties, this concerns in particular the "beach bar" at the Spreeufer and the parties in the child bath. The open air theatre on the mouse shelter could be accepted, as long as the accompanying catering trade is limited to the period of the abendlichen conceptions.

The BV SpV asks however: Why for such Events first green areas abused instead of traffic surfaces?! Much better suitably would for example be the traffic-technically optimally opened and Alexanderplatz duerstende after Event culture! The Monbijoupark however must in its recovery function for the neighbourhood (in particular for the families with children) and tourists as one of the few remaining places of the silence and meditation in opposite to the world cultural heritage museum island to be protected and strengthened!
